Three Islands - A Light Spectacle
A day before yesterday Goran Petercol, a conceptual artist of international reputation, introduced his biggest light installation project so far at the reception at the Rovinj ACI Marina in honour of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Tourist Association of Rovinj and as part of traditional " Rovinj Nights".
The "Three Islands" project encompasses several kilometres of the wider city area i.e. it connects three specific points of the Rovinj area - St. John's Island at the open sea, the Banjol Island and the Church of St. Euphemie which is the patron church of the town and also its highest point. The bell-tower of this church, the biggest baroque sacral building in Istria, lights up the Banjol Island two kilometres away. The church itself is connected with light intervals coming from the lighthouse at St. John's Island located five kilometres away from the church.
In harmony with the changes of light, this monumental parish church building with a copper statue of the patron saint at the top of the bell-tower, appears in the beautiful blue light. This mysterious blue light evoked in the viewers legends and myths from the ancient town history reminding them of the tale of the sunken Cisa and the origins of this town. The key to the understanding of this light project is in the play of dark and light which changes the night view of the old town, said the famous artist. Petercol used eight kilometres of electrical wires to realize his project, and he engaged a specialized company from Rijeka to install them. This project intrigued not only the artistic circles across Europe but also many of the visitors of the "Rovinj Nights". It is without a doubt one of the most significant cultural happenings along the Adriatic Coast this year. The light installation "Three Islands" will be displayed for the following ten days.
