Solar Croatia – A Utopia or a Chance for Development Solar Croatia – A Utopia or a Chance for Development was the title of the expert lecture given by Tony Vidan, manager of the energy program initiated by the non-governmental organization Green Action and member of the management boards of non-profit organizations Climate Action Network and Friends of the Earth, and Croatian Government’s Council on Climate Change. According to him, people are recklessly exploiting the natural resources. On account of such pretentious and irresponsible behavior, the future generations will have to invent and apply new technologies.
„Modern societies such as the American society are greedy and wasteful. American families are not satisfied with having only one car; they need to have at least three or even four cars parked in the driveways in front of their family homes. To have and not to lead quality lives is unfortunately the motto of the contemporary man and consumer. Fortunately, there are other examples as well. Namely, the example of the Scandinavian countries shows that with the application of new technologies the generations to come still might have a chance,” said Vidan.
While talking about renewable resources and energy saving, Vidan highlighted the already applicable technologies such as windmills and the possibility of using edible oil as fuel for diesel engines (biodiesel). What are some of the concrete actions we can take in our apartments and family homes? Among other, we can take showers instead of baths and by doing so save 50% of water; we can insulate our doors and windows and save 70% of the total heat loss from our apartments; or use devices labeled energy efficient which spend four to ten times less energy that the standard ones.
The lecture Solar Croatia – A Utopia or a Chance for Development was organized by the Tourist Association of Rovinj. |
