Commemorative Wreaths for Victims of the Sunken Baron Gautsch
The unfortunate steamer turned into a minefield laid 6 nautical miles away from the Rovinj lighthouse and the island bearing the same name, St. John's Island in the Open Sea (Sv. Ivan na Pučini), taking 240 passengers, mainly women and children, and 34 crewmembers to their eternal resting place under the sea. The memory of the first severe maritime tragedy that happened on the eve of the First World War was evoked by Dario Činić, Director of the Tourist Association of the City of Rovinj. In cooperation with the Diver Sport Center, the Tourist Association organizes a commemorative dive and laying of flower wreaths on the wreckage each year on the anniversary of the maritime tragedy.
