CELEBRATING WORLD TOURISM DAY

Largest Istrian Crostata – A gift for the guests and citizens of Rovinj

        The Tourist Board handed out over eight hundred cakes and one thousand crepes filled with fig marmalade to the citizens and guests of Rovinj in order to celebrate World Tourism Day in the sweetest of ways.

Stands were overflowing with sweet treats that took the students of vocational school ‘Eugen Kumičić’, aided by their teachers and mentors, a full eight hours to prepare the day before. The treats found their way to the hearts and mouths of a number of visitors in a very short amount of time, while the largest Istrian crostata ever made attracted attention not only because of its impressive size, but also because of its quality and appearance.

The Tourist Board, chief promoter of the World Tourism Day celebration (that also coincided with the organization of Rovinj’s First Festival of Delicacies), also kept in mind those visitors who may not keen on sweets and thus prepared various salty meals that were served by the fountain – sauerkraut with sheep meat, ham with Mediterranean herbs, homemade sausages, zarebnjak (smoked pork loin), stew, squids, sardines, škombri (type of blue fish), as well as žličnjaci (local specialty)in a homemade salsa sauce, fresh eggs, and pasta prepared in a giant skillet.

A great contribution to the manifestation was made by various manufacturers – coopers, wheelwrights, and sculptors whose miniature stone shelters, wooden instruments, clay, wire, ceramic, pearl and wood figurines demonstrated the splendor of autochthonous Istrian souvenirs.

Food products made with domestic flour, seafood, and mushrooms, as well as ones containing prosciutto and Istrian herbs were sold at suitable prices.

The culinary show put on by journalists arriving from the editorial offices of ‘Glas Istre’, ‘Večernji List’ and ‘La Voce del Popola’ was an attractive event.

Three ladies – Vesna Brnabić, Tanja Božić and Mihaela Medić, in the company of the only man amongst them, Sandro Petruz, demonstrated their culinary skills by preparing meals featuring gnocchi.

Rovinj’s brass band as well as several Istrian pipers and cantors provided great music all day long.
