„From cape to cape – by sea and land“

At the occasion of celebrating 16th September – Town’s Day and St. Euphemia’s Day, marathon “From cape to cape – by sea and land” was held, organized for the first time by the Sports Association and under the sponsorship of the Rovinj Tourist Board.

Marathon participants had to swim, walk, sail and pedal 12.500 meters by sea and 17.000 meters by land, i.e. to connect the bay San Polo and cape of sv. Nikola (St. Nicholas).

Each discipline, with primary and high school students who participated in them, had the main sport protagonists. Gordan Ukić swam across the required route and broke his personal record in swimming length. Famous Rovinj marathon runner Mirjana Kmačić Pellizzer run parallel to him on land. She was escorted by a famous Rovinj bicyclist Boban Memedović, also on route 17.000 meters long.

In addition to Kmačić Pellizzer, Sandi Mužina was running his seventh marathon in honour of St. Euphemia. Unlike the previous years, when he was running Poreč- Rovinj race, this year Mužina adjusted to the newly organized marathon in honour of which he run 40 kilometres from Pula to Rovinj. Gianpietro Venier and Sergio Sponza made their contribution to marathon by sailing with batanas (flat-boat).

At the Trg brodogradilišta (shipyard square), just before the start of the ceremonious session of the Town Council, all participants of the marathon “From cape to cape – by sea and land” were greeted by numerous audience who gave them laud applauses and ovations.

Participating in this demanding and synchronized race, all participants wanted to draw attention to the need to preserve and protect the sea and the littoral, to need and value of engaging in sports for recreational purposes and to somewhat forgotten original names of capes, which were being named for generations by fishermen for easier orientation and fishing.
