CELEBRATING THE WORLD TOURISM DAY Reaching an Archaeological Site on Bikes
Celebrating the World Tourism Day, the Tourist Board of Rovinj, in cooperation with the Lenica company, organised bike rides to the archaeological site of Monkodonjo. Some thirty bikers, who started from the Marshal Tito Square, were greeted at their destination point by the archaeologist of the Regional Museum of the Town of Rovinj, Mr Damir Matošević, who clarified the history of the site during the hour of sightseeing, and pointed out to the significance and value of discovering this archaeological location.
That is, there was talk of phenomenal, preserved and valuable ruins of importance beyond Istria, important for European archaeology and civilisation as well, which exhibit the manner of the civilisation spreading towards Central Europe. Extensive research on the ruins are being undertaken from as early as 1953, and prove that Monkodonja, this mountain-quince, half-way both from Rovinj and Bale, was the most important settlement on the west coast of Istria, with some one thousand inhabitants. It was established around 2000 BC, and its settlers viewed the fertile valley from the mountain, all the way to the sea. Thanks to maritime traffic, the inhabitants of Monkodonja enjoyed cultural and economic contacts with far civilisations, which is the origin of the rich jewellery and ceramics found here.
Following a lecture, the participants of the biking tour returned to Rovinj, taking the track through Madone di Campo and Lokva Piliš. TURISTIČKA ZAJEDNICA ROVINJ
